Menengai Oilers eyeing maximum points against Homeboyz

Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru is keen to pick a win in the opener against Homeboyz in the Kenya Cup match scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Nakuru ASK Showground.

The coach is wary of his bad home record against Homeboyz but he is confident his charges have all it takes to win the clash.

Menengai Oilers keen to win

“We want to start on a winning note. It is already tough knowing that we have never beaten Homeboyz at home and it is something we know that we have to overcome on Saturday. We just need to take care of the ball and dictate play,” Weru told the club media.

He added that playing the Deejayz is tricky as he is not aware of the game plan they will employ in the clash.

“Playing Homeboyz is tough because they are very unpredictable. I know what to expect when Kabras or KCB or Strathmore come but I do not know what to expect when Homeboyz comes. It will be a huge challenge and we have to adapt,” he stated.

Reflecting on the preseason, the tactician said it has been a challenging period but featuring in Impala Floodlit helped them to identify areas of weakness.

“We had a challenging preseason. I think we started off very well, putting in the physical work and just making sure that we are ready physically. The pre season friendlies including the Impala Floodlit tournament showed us a few grey areas that we needed to work on and improve,” he pointed out

“We definitely had to re-adjust (due to the delayed Kenya Cup kick off). It was a late call and we just treated it as another training week. It gave us a few more sessions to work on our plays and I believe it worked well for us,” he concluded.

Oilers additions

The former Nakuru RFC coach is happy with the additions he has made to the squad ahead of the new campaign. He went on to praise the likes of Celestine Mboi, Jadah Abdon and Elkeans Musonye.

“We have a few guys who will be playing in the Kenya Cup for the first time for us. Celestine Mboi has really shown and proved to be a really good frontrower during the Impala Floodlit tournament. We also have Jadah who is a very physical guy. I think one of the things we wanted to make sure we have is physicality especially when we are playing the big teams. We also have Elkeans Musonye who brings with him a wealth of experience.”

“In the backs we have our 7s Captain Tyson Okoth who moves from back row to inside centre. We feel that he will give us more in that position with the team that we have, We also have Alvin Khavoli who has proven lethal with ball in hand,” he concluded.
