Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology deny KCB bonus league point
The sixth round of the Kenya Cup took a new twist Saturday after newbies Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) denied the defending champs a crucial bonus point win despite conceding three tries while posting one penalty.
The students brought in a good defensive display to concede just two tries in the first half.
Lock Francis Mwita scored the opening try in the 21st minute while the captain Curtis Lilako scored the second try 15 minutes later to head to the break with a 14-0 lead after Ahmed Shaban converted both tries.
The second half was expected to bear the crucial bonus point but MMUST stood their ground and only conceded a penalty by Shaban and a try by Kenyan international Griffin Musila in the 65th minute whereas the visitors slotted a penalty Nobert Lumbwani.
The four points still has the Bankers at the log summit with now 24 points whereas Kabras remains placed second with 15 points tied with third placed Menengai Oilers.
Kabras have two matches in hand after a three bonus point win streak this season that stands unshaken and the missed bonus by the defending champs will bite back should Kabras return to win their next matches with a bonus.
In the other two matches played over the weekend, Impala and Mwamba left the Impala club with two points each after an intense 80 minutes of battle that ended in a stalemate after both teams managed to score 15 points.
It was, however, a big step for Kulabu (Mwamba) as the BlackShirts hopped a place above to sit seventh with eight points displacing BlakBlad who dropped to position eight with seven points.
The stalemate was not the Sarries objective as the two points did not shoot the side from their current second to last position held by their Ngong road neighbor Nondescripts who were whipped 29-22 by Strathmore to remain at the bottom of the team standings.
It was Strathmore who started off well to enjoy a good first 16-8 lead but the second half that was commanded by the Red Lions who nonetheless lost it at the end.
