Mabunge RC and St Mathias Busia Boys will carry the hopes of Busia County in the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association Regional Games that will kick off in Mumias starting Thursday this week.

Mabunge booked a ticket for the Regional Games after beating newcomers St Mathias Busia Boys 2-1 in the final.

They had earlier scored a big upset beating hosts and regular campaigners Butula National School 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw in regulation time.

The County games hosted by Butula saw newcomers St Mathias also secure a slot for the regional games. Mabunge were runners up in their group behind Achia Echakara Kamuriai while St Mathias also finished second in their group that was won by Butula.

Apart from Butula, other favourites who failed to live up to their billing included St Pauls Amukura High School (SPAHS) which managed fifth position finish.

Kolanya Boys failed at Sub County level after being eliminated by Kamuriai.

This year’s regional games were characterised by surprises with giants given rude shock, among them Kakamega Green Commandoes which was shown the door by Mwitoti. The same was replicated in Nyanza with Onjiko Secondary under former Sigalame Principal Joseph eliminating Maseno.

Mabunge have been pitted in Pool A against giant killers Mwitoti, former giant killers before they went into oblivion Bukembe from Bungoma County and Chavakali from Vihiga.

Football champions

Meanwhile, in Uasin Gishu county, Arnesens are the boys’ football champions after defeating Kimumu to earn a ticket at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) for the regionals to be held in Nakuru County this month.

In a match played at Kapsoya Boys grounds, Arnesens won 4-1 winners against Kimumu Boys with Eugene Ambani, grabbing a brace while Felix Were and Brian Kiplimo scoring a goal each.

Arnesens Coach Gilbert Lel said they are well prepared for the regional games where 14 counties will be competing for a single slot to the nationals.
