LOC warns against hoarding CHAN ticket
By Samson Ateka, July 31, 2025With tickets for Harambee Stars’ Sunday’s July 3, 2025, African Nations Championship (CHAN) opening match against DR Congo at Kasarani already sold out, Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman Nicholas Musonye believes the Pamoja co-hosting initiative will create a scintillating and unforgettable experience for the fans and visitors alike.
In addition, as the countdown continues, Musonye warned against hoarding of tickets, warning that culprits would face the severity of legal consequences.
“Ticket hoarding is a criminal offence, and those who engage in the vice will face the full force of the law. We are devising methods to curb hoarding (of tickets) and all should be well,” said Musonye.
The veteran football administrator described the concept of online ticketing as a brilliant idea, adding that ticket scalping will also be mission impossible in the absence of physical tickets.
“The element of hoarding tickets is bad manners, and we will not allow it, should it happen, as this is the kind of trend we want to eradicate in this country and in the sporting ecosystem. We have rules and laws which must be adhered to, by and large,” Musonye warned.
“It will be very difficult to access the stadiums without tickets. We want to sustain a culture of discipline and order,” Musonye added.
He assured fans, who will have missed tickets, that there would be alternative ways of watching the matches, and the fans should keep away from the stadiums if they have no tickets.
“These matches will be on TV, so fans should not worry, as there will also be fan zones at Uhuru Park,” said Musonye.
Spectators hoping to watch the event matches will be required to purchase their tickets online as there will be no sales of tickets on the matchday.
‘So far, preparations are in top gear, Nyayo looks like a real stadium to organise an event, same as Kasarani, and I want to assure Kenyans that CHAN is alive. The good news is that tickets for Harambee Stars’ first match are sold out, and that’s the advantage of having a good environment.”
“I was discussing with my marketing team and the ticketing committee how far they have gone, and they have told me that even for Kenya’s second match against Morocco, the speed of ticket sales is amazing.”
Musonye highlighted: “We want our people to watch the matches and that’s why our tickets are very modest, going at Ksh200 and Ksh500. We also have matches at Nyayo, and as there is much excitement around Kasarani ticket sales, we also want to promote Nyayo, as that same evening on Sunday, Morocco is playing Zambia. The quick sale of tickets is a good sign that the tournament will be vibrant and memorable.”
Kenya’s Harambee Stars is making its first-ever appearance in the CHAN tournament in their Group A opener against DR Congo at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi this Sunday, from 3 pm Kenyan time.
DR Congo, two-time CHAN champions, will pose a formidable challenge for the hosts.
As co-hosts of CHAN 2024, alongside East African neighbours Uganda and Tanzania, Kenya qualified automatically for the tournament.
Kenya will face Angola, Morocco, DR Congo and Zambia in Group A.
