Hockey, Rugby legend Peter Akatsa dies

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) and Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) are mourning the loss of sports legend Peter Akatsa, who passed away last Friday.
Akatsa’s contributions to both rugby and hockey have left a lasting legacy in Kenyan sports.

In a statement, KRU paid tribute to Akatsa, highlighting his remarkable achievements in both hockey and rugby.
He represented Kenya in two Olympic Games in 1984 and 1988 and played a crucial role in securing a hockey gold medal at the 1987 All African Games in Nairobi.
Akatsa also proudly wore the Kenya Harlequin rugby jersey and was a key member of the East African Tuskers during their 1982 tour of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
KRU expressed deep condolences and honored his unwavering dedication to sports, extending their wishes for his soul to rest in eternal peace.
“With heavy hearts, we pay tribute to a true sports legend. We mourn the loss of Kenyan hockey great, Peter Akatsa, who left us on October 7, 2023, at the age of 63,” reads part of KRU statement.
“Peter’s legacy extends far and wide, from his two-time Olympic appearances in 1984 and 1988, to his pivotal role in securing hockey gold at the 1987 All African Games in Nairobi, Kenya.
“His talents weren’t limited to just hockey; he also proudly donned the rugby jersey for Kenya Harlequin and was a key member of the East African Tuskers during their Zambia-Zimbabwe Tour in 1982,” the statement revealed.

KHU, on the other hand, celebrated Akatsa’s significant contributions to Kenya Hockey X1 during the 1980s.
He was a vital part of the Kenya national field hockey team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
Known for his exceptional speed, he inspired many athletes along the way. Afterwards, Akatsa moved to the United States, where he pursued a long career as a coach and educator. He also became an active member of a church’s outreach program.
