Lakeside Brothers FC triumphs after nail-biting finale
Lakeside Brothers FC walked away with Sh300,000 after triumphing at the Tony Osine Cup Tournament at the weekend 5-4 on post-match penalties against Santiago FC in an epic finale held at a packed Woodley Grounds.
The match itself went goalless in regulation time with highly tactical approaches by both sides.
The match which began as late as 1715 hours did not go to extra time ultimately seeing the duel settled on spot-kicks.
Match officials had delayed the start of the game due to non-payment of dues. Lakeside tactician William Zaire Ayuga was a happy man after the pressures of penalties, praising his charges for a good fight to the end. “This is a good avenue for talent to be showcased and I am happy with what my boys have achieved to this end. I want to thank the Tournament organizers for a good job.
We hope going forward we will get more sponsors to come on board, and also the County Government, to help renovate this majestic Ground which has developed lots of talent in Kenya.”
It was a fairly balanced game with lots of cautious play but a bit of physicality, as well, seeing two bookings in the process. Santiago under the tutorship of Kenya Police FC Fullback David Owino had more of the ball and had numerous scoring chances in the game with Vincent Owen being the main danger-man from the flanks. However, their lack of patience and sharpness saw them in limbo.
Lakeside also had their precious moments in regular time with the likes of attacking midfielder Brian Odhiambo and forward Ryan Wesley Ogam posing all manner of questions to the opponents’ back line.
Even so, the eventual winners also failed to pull the trigger at the right moments, thus Santiago getting the time to regroup and build again.
The spot-kicks for the winning team were converted by Brian Abich, John Nyari, Gor Mahia Striker John Nyawir Odhiambo, Mathare United FC attacker Daniel Otieno and Gor Mahia Right Full-back Paul Ochwoga.
On the other end, Santiago netted their penalties through Alex Karani, Vincent Wanyama, Bruno Elijah and Jeff Njoroge who came on as a substitute.
Another substitute, however, Collins Chibole skied his spot-kick to send the Lakeside Brothers fans into song and dance.
The tournament which is in its second edition was sponsored by a Kibera-based NGO called SHOFCO.
