Ksh3.5M in store for Eldoret Marathon winner
The Eldoret City Marathon launched its 4th edition of Friday at the Uasin Gishu County Government offices with the marathon set for April 10.
The event was graced by elite athletes, sponsors, government officials and other stakeholders with Daniel Chemno, the Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu county as the Chief Guest. He called upon as an appeal for athletes participating to ‘run clean’ urging for zero doping cases The Deputy Governor also launched the registration of the marathon, declaring it officially open from Friday.
The registration will take place in three counties namely, Nandi County, Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu county. In Uasin Gishu county, it will be available in Eldoret town in three centres which are The Rupas Mall, The Uasin Gishu County Offices and the Eldoret City Marathon offices on Grand Pri House. An online registration portal is also available on www.eldoretcitymarathon.co.ke.
Eldoret City Marathon is the highest paying marathon in Africa and the only one that awards positions one to twenty finishers.
This year’s edition has a prize purse of Sh 18,030,000 with the winner taking home Sh 3,500,000. Within a year, they doubled the prize bracket, increased the total prize money, doubled the number of participants, and more than tripled the number of tree seedlings planted.
They are getting bigger every year. The growing popularity has attracted runners from all over the world, including Germany, Argentina,Ethiopia, Spain, and Nigeria among others.
As previously done in every edition, together with sponsors and partners, the marathon champions climate action in several practical ways, including planting at least 1 million tree seedlings before the start of the marathon.
Kenya Seed among other sponsors pledged to support the event with seedling to reach the targeted number. A Climate Action Conference will be held on 7th-9th April 2022 prior to the marathon kick off.
