Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men’s and women’s basketball teams were successful on the road after achieving important wins in the Kenya National Basketball League over the weekend.

The mens’ Dockers team won 64-52 in a fierce game, played at Ulinzi Sports Complex last Sunday, against the home team, Ulinzi Warriors.

Eugene Phillips had 22 points for reigning champions KPA to emerge as the main scorer for his team alongside Philip Tobias with 12 points to the basket. The soldiers, who last week lost by a single basket to Equity Dumas, once again got frustrated at home.

Ulinzi’s key men in the duel were captain Eric Mutoro with 18 points, William Ochieng with 16 points and Byron Mabonga with 12 points as Ulinzi tactician Bernard Mufutu looked on in anguish.

In another men’s clash held on the same day, Equity Dumas trounced Kenyatta University Pirates 6-40.

Victor Ochieng had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in the game, for the Dumas.  James Mwangi and Victor Bosire also weighed in with 10 points apiece in a game that had so much running and physicality involved. The University side reigned supreme in the first quarter with 11-10 in a tight race but afterwards, it was a free fall for them as the inspiring Dumas used their experience to shut out the game.

In the women’s, KPA won two key games away in Nairobi.

In their first game of the weekend, the defending champions smashed Kenyatta University Oryx 79-16 in one of the most one-sided games in recent times.

The Dockers, under legendary coach Anthony Ojukwu, were ruthless from the whistle and dominated the court in all aspects; both offensively and defensively. Both Ifunaya Okoro and Natalie Akinyi with 14 points led the charge, assisted closely by Jemima Omondi with 10 points.

The three also contributed to almost 20 points in free throws.

On the other side, Sylvia Chacha made 8 points with Miriam Ingasian making 6 points in a very shambolic show for Caleb Osewe’s charges.

In a different game, KPA Women’s team ran riot against Storms a 72-15 walloping at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Hilda Indasi was the  top-scorer with 16 points followed by Ifunaya Okoro with 14 points.
