Key stats as Uganda seek redemption against Guinea after slow start at CHAN

By , August 8, 2025

TotalEnergies 2024 African Nations Championship co-hosts Uganda will seek to bounce back after losing their opening fixture 3-0 to Algeria earlier in the week.

Uganda Cranes will face Guinea on Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Mandela National Stadium, the first meeting between the two sides at CHAN as they battle for Group C points starting at 8 pm local time.

For Guinea, this fixture is their 17th appearance at CHAN, with Uganda becoming the 15th different opponent they have faced. The West Africans have previously met tournament hosts twice, losing to Morocco in 2018 before overcoming Cameroon in the 2020 third-place playoff.

Friday’s clash will be their fourth against an East African side, with past results including a 1-0 win over Rwanda in the 2020 quarterfinals, a 2-2 draw with Tanzania in the same edition, and a 1-0 defeat to Sudan in 2018.

Uganda’s record

Uganda enter this contest having faced West African teams on six previous occasions. Their record includes victories over Burkina Faso in 2014 and Senegal in 2022, draws with Mali and Côte d’Ivoire, and defeats against Togo and Côte d’Ivoire in their last encounters.

Guinea opened this year’s campaign with a 1-0 triumph over Niger, continuing a trend of winning their opening match in their last three CHAN appearances. The team has gone eight games without a defeat in regulation time (4 wins, 4 draws). They last lost in open play against Morocco in the second group match of 2018.

Guinea are yet to win two matches in a row at CHAN or secure victories in both opening group games. The side has recorded six wins in open play at CHAN, four of them ending 1-0.

Elsewhere, Uganda began their CHAN 2024 campaign with a 3-0 loss to Algeria, their 11th defeat in 19 CHAN outings (2 wins, 6 draws). Cranes have never won their first two group matches except in 2018. Statistically, Cranes are yet to win a game immediately after losing at CHAN. Uganda have recorded defeats in their second matches at CHAN, including 1-0 losses to Sudan (2011), Zambia (2016), and Namibia (2018), plus a 2-1 setback to Togo (2020).

Uganda’s only win in their last 15 CHAN games was a 1-0 victory over Senegal in 2022 (5 draws, 8 defeats). The Algeria defeat matched their heaviest in the competition, equalling the 5-2 loss to Morocco in 2020.

Meanwhile, the team is also the only co-host to lose its opening match, as Kenya and Tanzania both started with wins.
