Paris Olympics 2024: Kenya’s trio progresses to men’s 1500m semi-finals

Former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot led his 1500m teammates Brian Komen and Reynold Cheruiyot to the semi-finals of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.
Komen competed in heat one and finished second; Cheruiyot finished fifth in heat two, while Reynold claimed his position at the penultimate stage after finishing fourth too on Friday, August 2, 2023.
“3:37.12 Nineteen-year-old Reynold Cheruyoit got a taste of the Olympic atmosphere, cruising past the 6th fastest mark to qualify fourth in the last heat of the men’s 1500m for the semi-finals.
“Welcome to the big boys’ club! All three Kenyan 1500m men are into the semi-finals,” Team Kenya noted in a post on X on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Meanwhile, Komen managed to qualify in a heat that also had Commonwealth Games champion Oliver Hoare. In the mix was also the reigning world champion Josh Kerr.
Komen clocked 3:36.31, with Kerr emerging as the race’s winner in a season-best time of 3:35.83. Girje Nordas clocked 3:36:41 to claim the remaining podium slot, while Anass Essayi, Yared Nuguse, and Robert Farken managed to earn tickets into the semis too.
Olympic silver medallist, Timothy Cheruiyot, who is also a former world champion, passed the 800 mark in a 1:57 while occupying second place at that time. Although he was still in second place as he passed the 1200m mark, Cheruiyot was beaten, with Ermias Girma winning and Cole Hocker taking second place.
Pietro Arese was third, and Niels Laros came in fourth, while Nader completed the list of automatic qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Reynold Cheruiyot competed with his top rival, Jakob Ingebrigtsen. The Kenyan clocked 3:37.12 behind the Norwegian as Stefan Nillessen and Kessler Hobbs finished first and second.
