Kenya’s league title up for grabs
Former Tusker FC defender George Waweru has said that the KPL title race is wide open for the first four teams leading the table.
Speaking on Wednesday at Camp Toyoyo Stadium, Nairobi, the now retired player gave his former clubs slim chances to topple over Gor Mahia.
“The league title race is wide open since we still have a handful of matches yet to be played.
Tusker won it last season, but this season they seem to be struggling while AFC Leopards are a squad on the resurgence. Nzoia sugar is a surprise package to me that might cause some upsets,” Waweru said.
The former center back won four league titles with Tusker FC right after joining from AFC Leopards during the 1999/2000 season where he had won the KPL Player of The Year Award.
Also known as ‘Jojo’, he was part of Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee’s Harambee Stars squad that carried the Kenyan flag in Tunisia during the Afcon tournament in 2004. After suffering a traumatic spinal injury that affected his neck, Jojo had to withdraw from the tourney. Despite this setback, he went to carve out a successful career abroad, eventually competing in the top division of the Swedish football league.
Waweru won the Swedish Player of The Year Award for the year 2006/2007 succeeding former Arsenal ace Freddie Ljungberg who had won it the previous season.
He later came back to Kenya and retired at Posta Rangers FC, his last club in the KPL, but still could not hold back his tears for the love of his former club – Tusker Fc.
Tusker FC are on the hunt for the KPL title, sitting second in the standings with 39 points from 20 matches. Just six points separate them from leaders Gor who have played one game more, and Tusker will be hoping to close the gap and clinch the title.
AFC Leopards are currently tying with Nzoia Sugar on 38 points. After 21 games played in the season so far. Both team are neck and neck in the KPL race.
