The Kenya National Men’s Kabaddi team will face Sri Lanka in their opening fixture at the 4th edition of Bangabandhu Cup scheduled for May 26 to June 4 in Bangladesh.

12 teams will compete over 33 matches in the prestigious annual tournament organized by the Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation. Hosts Bangladesh are the defending champions of the Bangabandhu Cup after beating Chinese Taipei 42-28 in the 2023 final in Dhaka.

Started in 2021, the Bangabandhu Cup is named after Bangladesh’s father of the nation – Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Kenya were runners up in both the 2021-22 editions, losing 34-24 in 2021 and a closely contested 34-31 in 2022.

Bangladesh resumed their supremacy in 2023 by defeating Chinese Taipei 42-28 to win the Bangabandhu Cup three times in a row.

Kenya in group B

Kenya is in group B alongside Sri Lanka, Iraq, Thailand and Uganda while Group A comprises of Bangladesh, Nepal, Poland, Indonesia, Malaysia

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. The winners of the two semi-finals will clash in the Bangabandhu Cup 2024 final to be held on June 3 at the Shaheed Suhrawardy National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, which will also host all the games.

Bangladesh, the defending champions and hosts, will face South Korea at 4 p.m. Eastern Africa time on Sunday, with three additional matches set for the first day. Nepal will play Malaysia, Iraq will face Japan while Uganda will play Thailand.

The Kenyan side which is evenly constituted with upcoming junior talents, local league players and foreign based players will be hoping for better returns, having come second on two occasions.
