Tributes are pouring in for National Super League (NSL) side Shabana FC’s Chairman Nyandoro Kambi died after a short illness.
Former Football Federation of Kenya (FKF) President Sam Nyamweya who is also a former patron of the club, said that he had learned of Kambi’s demise with profound shock
“It is with deep sorrow that I have learnt of the untimely death of Kambi who was my personal friend. On my behalf and that of my close friends, I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives and friends for the loss of their beloved one,’’ said Nyamweya.
Added Nyamweya: “The late Kambi was a charismatic, diligent and visionary official whose long years of service at the team touched and positively impacted the lives of many footballers in Gusii land and indeed its environs. Sadly, we have lost a diligent football administrator. Fare Thee Well Daktari.”
Former Kisii County Governor James Ongwae also mourned the deceased, saying Kambi was a passionate football administrator and leader to a fault.
“I must say that I’m devastated to have learnt of the sudden death of Shabana chairman and advocate Kambi. Indeed death robs the best but their good deeds live on and this is one man whom the football fraternity shall dearly miss,” Ongwae said.
Shabana FC media liaison officer Joseph Simba described the departed chair as a father to many.
According to Simba, Kambi would use his resources to ensure the club honours matches.
Best defender
“He was a dedicated fan of Shabana and had always committed himself to ensuring that the club gained promotion to the Premier League. You will forever remain in our hearts Daktari,’’ said Simba.
Former Shabana captain Andrew Ongwae, one of the best defenders of his generation, who also had a stint with multiple champions Gor Mahia, remembered Kambi as a dedicated fan and administrator.
Seasoned Sports Journalist Elias Makori also eulogised the late Kambi, saying that Shabana and indeed teams in the larger Nyanza have lost an astute manager.
“He was a polished patriot in football administration and I’m saddened by his untimely death. May God rest his soul in eternal peace,’’ said Makori.
