Kenya Police FC set sights on CAF as Ndayiragije vows to bolster squad
By Dennis Mabuka, June 24, 2025Kenya Police FC head coach Etienne Ndayiragije has revealed plans to strengthen his squad ahead of the club’s historic debut in the CAF Champions League later this year.
The law enforcers concluded the 2024/25 season with a 1-1 draw against outgoing champions Gor Mahia to finish the campaign on 65 points. K’Ogalo, who were denied a third straight crown, finished second with 59 points.
Speaking after receiving the trophy at Ulinzi Sports Complex, the Burundian tactician revealed their plans for the lucrative inter-club competition, which is expected to kick off in September.
“I have a lot of confidence in the current squad, but we will be heading into the transfer market to bolster it,” said Ndayiragije.
“Our next focus is to prepare well for the Champions League. We got a taste of continental football in the Confederation Cup, but this is a much bigger stage, and it demands that we step up our efforts.”
On winning the title, he said: “This title is a reward for the hard work everyone at the club has put in. I’m proud of the players and the entire technical team.
“We also congratulate our opponents, especially Gor Mahia, who pushed us to the limit and kept the pressure on. It was a tough season with worthy competition, and we hope to maintain this standard next season.”
Last season, Police took part in the CAF Confederation Cup by virtue of winning the domestic FKF Cup, but they failed to go past the second preliminary stage after losing to Zamalek of Egypt.
Police midfielder Kenneth Muguna said this season has been among the most competitive he has experienced in the top-flight.
“To beat Gor Mahia and Tusker to the title is not an easy task; not just any team can do it easily in this league,” said the former Gor Mahia midfielder.
“We did not achieve it easily. It has been tough, but at the end of the day, we made it. Congratulations to Gor Mahia and Tusker; they have had a good run. They should not feel like they have had a bad season; it’s just that maybe, this season, we were better.”
Meanwhile, Posta Rangers head coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo has vowed to help the side remain in the top-flight after they finished 16th to earn a play-off battle against National Super League outfit Naivas.
In the closely fought relegation battle on the final day, FC Talanta and Nairobi City Stars were relegated to the lower division, leaving the mailmen fighting for their status in a two-legged FKF Premier League–National Super League promotion/relegation playoff.
“I am proud of the effort and performance from my players. We had several chances and, had we been more clinical, we could have won. Nonetheless, I am happy we have secured a playoff opportunity to fight for our place in the FKFPL,” said Omollo after their 1-1 draw against Bandari in Mombasa.
“Compared to our last game against Mathare, this was not the outcome we hoped for. I wanted a home win to close the season on a high note, but the match gave us insights into our squad depth as we prepare for the new season.”
Meanwhile, Kakamega HomeBoyz FC’s sensational striker, Moses Shumah, finished the season as the top scorer after scoring 17 goals, while Police goalkeeper Job Ochieng claimed the Golden Glove after keeping 13 clean sheets.
