Kenya Open tennis to make a comeback after four years
Tennis Kenya (TK) Executive Officer Nancy Nduku has confirmed that the thrilling Kenya Open tennis Championships will be staged at the Nairobi Club, August 7-13.
Nduku noted with concern the few number of active tennis players currently in the country adding that she hopes Angela Okutoyi’s exploits on the global scene is something that can serve as a catalyst to promote the game among school going children as the tournament was last held in 2018.
“We are expecting a good turnout locally and internationally. Some pro players from across Africa and some from Europe are expected too,” Nduku said optimistically, adding that hosting such global events in the country not only markets Kenya, but also develops future talents.
According to Nduku, top players from South Africa, Egypt, Algeria, Zimbabwe and European nations have already confirmed their participation.
The global event will feature five categories that has also seen the inclusion of persons with disabilities who will compete in the wheelchair singles for both men and women.
Other categories include singles (men and women), doubles, mixed doubles and finally the seniors’ categories involving athletes who are 50 years and above to compete in the doubles and mixed doubles for both men and women.
The entry fee is set for Sh 2,000 with Sh 700,000 set as the total prize money, Nduku revealed adding that after all the athletes have paid their entry fees, then the tournament seedings and draw will be done next week in Kenya’s capital city.
Former Wimbledon doubles champion Angela Okutoyi won the last time the event was held in 2018 and made history as the youngest ever Kenya Open champion as Ibrahim Kibet made the top honours in the male category.
Lack of sponsorship deals and inadequate funds led to the cancellation of the 2019 edition and then the Coronavirus pandemic struck leading to the event not being held in 2020 and 2021, while last year it was not held due to a crowded calendar according to Nduku.
Now Tennis Kenya has confirmed the much awaited tourney, after four years in the dark to be staged in Nairobi, August.
