By , July 15, 2023

Kenya U20 fought well until the final whistle but fell short, losing 34-25 to Samoa in their opening match of the World U20 Trophy at Nyayo Stadium.

Chipu faced a formidable opponent in Samoa, a team that had consistently impressed in previous editions of the competition.

Kenya lead early

The match began positively for Curtis Olago’s charges as they opened the scoring with a try from Stanislaus Shikoli, brilliantly set up by fullback Faran Juma. However, the conversion attempt by Patrick Wainaina went wide.

Samoa responded in the 13th minute with a try from Peter Stanley, assisted by fly-half Afa Molela. They added a penalty to take an 8-5 lead before being temporarily reduced to 14 players due to a yellow card shown to Stanley.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Samoa extended their lead with a try from Will Hunt, heading into halftime with a 13-5 advantage.

In the second half, Kenya narrowed the gap with a penalty, but Samoa quickly responded with two tries from their captain, John Mata Samuelu.

Samoa also faced their own disciplinary issues, as their captain Samuelu received a yellow card, followed by Saba Abulashvili, leaving them with only 13 players on the field.

Kenya’s fightback

Kenya U20 fought back and managed to score through substitute Wycliffe Otieno, bringing the scoreline to 27-13 after a successful conversion.

Although Samoa conceded another yellow card, Kenya was unable to capitalize on the numerical advantage, allowing Samoa to score another try through Hunt, extending their lead to 34-13.

In the 77th minute, Chipu showed determination by landing a try from a maul, but the conversion by David Spenser was unsuccessful.

Kenya seized a late opportunity following a mistake by Samoa, resulting in a try from Raphael Wanga, sparking cheers from the stands.

The second round of matches are set for Thursday
