Kenya Lionesses to conduct trials in Kakamega

According to the Kenya Rugby Union, the two-day trials, which will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on both days, are specifically targeting players based in the Western and Nyanza regions. This initiative aims to provide talented players from these areas with an opportunity to showcase their skills and secure a place in the provisional national squad.
The Lionesses technical bench has emphasised the importance of widening the player pool, ensuring that rugby talent across the country is identified and nurtured. The trials provide a platform for previously untapped talent to earn recognition at the highest level. This effort underscores the Kenya Rugby Union’s commitment to growing women’s rugby at the grassroots and strengthening the Lionesses’ competitiveness on the international stage.
Lionesses to host major African event
Meanwhile, Nairobi will host the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Cup, a continental showpiece that will bring together elite women’s rugby sides. Confirming the news on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) said the tournament will be staged at the historic RFUEA Grounds from November 14 to 17, 2025.
”Mark your calendars, brethren. More rugby action will be coming to the capital as we host the 2025 Rugby Africa women’s sevens cup at the RFUEA GROUNDS from the 14th to the 17th of November. Ticket prices and more details to follow.,” KRU said in a statement.
The announcement marks another major milestone for women’s rugby in Kenya as the sport continues to grow in popularity and competitiveness across the region. For the national women’s team, the Lionesses, the tournament offers an opportunity to shine on home soil.
The Lionesses are currently a formidable force in Africa after leaving a mark in this year’s Challenger Series in South Africa. The Kenyan ladies won the tournament back-to-back on Saturday, March 8, 2025, with a convincing 17-00 victory over hosts South Africa in the second leg of the Challenger Series held at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
