Kenya Cup: Kabras resilience beat Quins as Mwamba outclass struggling Leos

By , February 10, 2024

Kabras Sugar RFC secured a 50-22 victory against Kenya Harlequin in a match that was held at the RFUEA Ground on Saturday, February 10, 2024.

Kabras were very impressive in the second half, as they outclassed Quins by scoring five unanswered tries and consequently registering their eighth win of the season.

However, the Sugar Millers were shocked in the first half as they were trailing, an unmatched record this season for the heavyweights.

Quins grabbed the lead through a penalty by Cornelius Mokoro, but Kabras, through Eugene Sifuna, scored a try, which was converted by Ntabeni Dukisa to have the scoreboard read 7-3.

Paul Mutsami ensured Quins went ahead again, and a successful conversion by Mokoro took the margin to 10-7. An 11th-season try by Derrick Ashiundu and a conversion by Dukisa saw the gap narrow.

Quins stretched the lead to 22-14, and the visitors fought back with a try by Edward Mwaura that saw the gap narrow to 22-19 as the players went for a halftime break.

Walter Okoth’s try as the second half began earned Kabras bonus points, and after a conversion, the visitors were enjoying a 26-22 lead. Another try by Brian Juma saw the Millers stretch the lead to 31-22.

Lameck Ambetsa scored the sixth try for Kabras, and Dukisa converted to extend their lead to 43-22. Dukisa’s crosskick that set up Mathias Osimbo produced the eighth try for the Kakamega outfit, which won by a 50-22 margin.

Leos fall

Meanwhile, Strathmore Leos failed to impress on home ground after going down 22-7 against Mwamba RFC.

The result is a testament to Mwamba’s resurgence, who took a 19-0 lead before the first half ended.

The visitors took a 5-0 lead before Steve Sikuta made it 10-0, and a conversion by Tony Omondi meant the scoreline was extended to 12-0.

A third try for Mwamba came five minutes before the half-time whistle. After their second-rower crossed to score, Omondi made a successful conversion to stretch the lead to 19-0.

Omondi’s bright day continued as he scored a penalty as the second half began. However, Mwamba were slightly slowed by Leos after Matoka cut through the opponent’s defense line and chipped the ball over Mwamba’s fullback.

As he was about to score, the ball was kicked out of play, which meant the home side was awarded a penalty try.

As Mwamba went home joyful after a third straight victory, Leos were left gnashing their teeth after their sixth consecutive defeat.
