Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end following a 3-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in Abidjan on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

The match, played at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara, saw the Harambee Stars outclassed in a one-sided contest that confirmed Ivory Coast’s place at the global tournament.

Franck Kessié opened the scoring for the hosts in the 7th minute, setting the tone for a dominant performance. Yan Diomandé doubled the lead in the 54th minute, and Amad Diallo sealed the win with a powerful strike in the 84th minute.

The result marked Ivory Coast’s return to the World Cup after missing the last edition. In celebration, FIFA World Cup posted on Facebook, “Côte d’Ivoire are back at the #FIFAWorldCup!”

Kenya, on the other hand, struggled to create meaningful chances throughout the game and ended the match goalless.

The loss sparked mixed reactions from leaders and fans, with some expressing frustration and others offering words of encouragement to the players.

Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria took a lighter tone, commending the team’s effort despite the result.

Kama si Mvua, wangetujua leo. Anyway, well played. The Harambee Stars! There’s always room for improvement,” Mosiria said.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, however, delivered a sharper critique, questioning the team’s motivation and preparation.

“You mean Harambee Stars cannot win without financial or money enticement? Or was it due to bad weather? Even international players didn’t leave any mark on the pitch! They should have taken CHAN players to go and play FIFA qualifiers against the Ivory Coast, although Austin came late, 10 minutes to the final whistle,” Cherargei posted.

The defeat officially eliminates Kenya from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while Ivory Coast advances as one of Africa’s top representatives.

Despite the setback, fans and analysts have urged the Harambee Stars to regroup, rebuild, and focus on future competitions, including the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
