KEFWA Polls: James Situma, Terry Ouko, Calvin Odongo clinch top seats
James Situma retained his seat as Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) president unopposed during Saturday’s elections held at the Zetech University in Ruiru.
This was only the second poll in the union in 13 years. Situma in his acceptance speech promised to continue fighting for player rights.
Situma begins second tenure KEFWA
“I am grateful for this new mission and as I begin my second tenure, my commitment to player welfare remains unwavering. Together, we can make our game better. Our members are the owners of the game and so it is our plan to make sure that they get what they deserve. I want to thank all stakeholders including Football Kenya Federation for their quest to help get us to a better place. Our challenges can be sorted only if we sit down together because if we are not speaking the same language, we cannot be effective as a Union. We continue to work on new areas around addressing match-fixing and also player mental health,” Situma stated.
The former Kenyan international gets a chance to lead the player organization for the next five years and will be assisted by immediate former KEFWA Communication Officer Terry Ouko who is now the vice President.
Meanwhile, Posta Rangers’ forward Calvin Odongo emerged victorious in a tightly contested Player Representative Poll, defeating Humphrey Mieno from Tusker FC by a 9-6 margin. Odongo has been elected as the Premier League Representative.
Isaac Oburu narrowly defeated Robert Ouma with a close 6-5 result, to become the Player Representative in the National Super League. The contest was tied at 5-5 in the regular voting, but the tie-breaker was determined by the online vote.
Other KEFWA slots
In the Women’s Premier League, Catherine Nabiswa emerged victorious with a strong 9-4 result, defeating her competitor Juliet Auma.
Meanwhile, Sharon Busienei dominated the Player Representative contest in the Women’s Division 1, securing a resounding victory with 18 votes against Leyla Apiyo’s 5 votes.
The elections were carried out by the KEFWA Elections Board led by Chairperson Advocate Marion Wambui. The elections which only lasted an hour were declared free and fair by observers as contestants shook hands afterwards.
