The 2025 Prinsloo Sevens kicked off in thrilling fashion at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Saturday, August 2, 2025, with top sides Strathmore Leos, KCB Rugby, Menengai Oilers, Kabras RFC, and Kenya Harlequin claiming vital opening wins.

Defending champions Strathmore Leos began their title defence with a dominant 26-5 win over Daystar Falcons. Victor Mola and Barnabas Owuor were instrumental, with Mola crossing twice and Owuor sealing the result with a late centre-post try.

National Sevens Circuit leaders KCB Rugby overcame a tough Catholic Monks challenge to win 17-10. Bob Muhati opened the scoring before Brian Wahinya and Samuel Asati added key tries to maintain KCB’s unbeaten run in the 2025 circuit.

Menengai Oilers also impressed in Pool B, cruising to a 24-5 victory over newly promoted Zetech Oaks. Daniel Kipchirchir bagged a brace, while Philip Okeyo scored his maiden try for the Oilers to cap a strong team performance.

Kabras Sugar RFC were equally ruthless, defeating Impala RFC 24-5 to take early command of Pool D. Tries from Lamec Ambetsa, Jackson Siketi and Patrick Kluivert ensured the 2023 champions got off to a strong start.

Quins, Nondies, Nakuru shine

Kenya Harlequin, the reigning National 7s Circuit champions, bounced back from a disappointing Driftwood 7s with a 22-10 win over MSC Rugby. Under the leadership of Simon Ondongo, Quins showed intent and structure to kick off their campaign in Pool A.

Meanwhile, hosts Nakuru RFC edged past Kabete Stallions 12-7 in a tense encounter. Cyprian Ombaso and Javan Otieno scored early tries before Nakuru held off a spirited second-half response from the Stallions.

In Pool C, 2024 finalists Nondies beat Kisumu RFC 22-7 with standout contributions from Daniel Okito, Fred Shisia and Hillary Baraza. Kisumu’s red card in the second half allowed Nondies to pull clear.

Mwamba RFC finally earned their first win of the season, edging MMUST 14-12 in a dramatic finish. After building a 14-0 lead, Mwamba withstood a late MMUST comeback to clinch a crucial win and end a five-match losing streak.

The action continues on Sunday, August 3, with teams aiming to secure quarterfinal slots in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested second leg of the 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit.
