Limuru Golf Course will this weekend host a field of 98-top ranked golfers for the 98th edition of the Limuru Open and the Brakenhurst Trophy.

The event is primed to showcase the finest in Kenyan golf with the participants vying for a prize pool of Sh 500,000, courtesy of NCBA and Mit Vidda Homes.

Among the participants is John Lejirma, who last weekend claimed victory at the Goldfields Trophy at Kakamega Sports Club with an unbeatable score of 9-under-par.

Lejirma is on a winning streak, having won six out of the 39 events in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series, with 19 already completed. He is aiming to surpass former Kenya-One, Michael Karanga of Ndumberi Golf Club, the reigning champion of the Limuru Open, currently leading the series. Despite his strong performance during the 2023/24 season, Karanga has been struggling with his game lately, finding it difficult to keep up with Samburu-1 from Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

With the Limuru course demanding precision, Lejirma approaches the tournament with a focused mindset, determined to put forth his best performance. He plans to keep the ball in play, exercise patience, and make wise choices around the greens.

“It is a layout where course management is crucial; I will play percentage golf to stay competitive,” he said.

Lejirma is relying on his current form, as he has been diligently working on both the mental and physical facets of his game, which are starting to align.

Looking to maintain his momentum, he said: “I’ve had some positive performances lately, and I’m eager to carry that momentum into Limuru.” While he recognizes that several players are currently in excellent form, he acknowledges that the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) presents a challenge. “I hold great respect for my fellow competitors, as I know anyone can rise to the occasion. Nevertheless, my primary focus is on my performance. The conditions at Limuru can be tough, but I believe achieving around 5 to 7 under over the three rounds is possible.” Consistency and taking advantage of every scoring opportunity will be crucial for success. Limuru Country Club Captain, Njoroge Githere, noted that significant work has been completed to prepare the course for the tournament, including clearing the rough to enhance scoring chances. The greens are anticipated to have speeds between 10 and 11 on the stimp meter, and they are in good condition. Furthermore, enhancements have been made to the tee boxes.
