Huge setback for Kenya as injury rules Kamworor out of New York City Marathon
By Joel Sang, October 18, 2023An injury setback has ruled out Geoffrey Kamworor from taking part in the New York City Marathon on November 2, 2023.
Kamworor said in a Facebook post that he will not be among the participants, and the injury denies him the chance to contest what has been his favourite course. He is a two-time New York City Marathon champion.
Injury report
“After good results in the World Cross Country Championships and the London Marathon earlier this year, I was building towards a great New York City Marathon.
“Unfortunately, an injury came my way and didn’t leave me any other option but to take some rest and focus on 2024,” Kamworor said.
The long-distance runner has had a challenging campaign recently after finishing fifth at the World Cross-country Championships when he opened his season.
After the World Cross Country, he took part in the London Marathon and clocked a personal best of 2:04:23, where he was second, and this is his recent best performance.
He was not part of the previous Olympic Games and also had a forgettable outing in the World Athletics Championship in Oregon in 2022, finishing fifth. At the Boston Marathon, the three-time World Cross Country champion came in eighth.
Kamworor’s season
Meanwhile, the recent injury denies him even a good chance to make history, as he was hoping to become the third athlete to win three men’s open division titles.
The New York City Marathon has been a rather good hunting zone for Kamworor, as he has made the podium in all four of his appearances.

His absence will leave Kenya’s Evans Chebet and Albert Korir competing against the Ethiopian duo of Maru Teferi and Mosinet Geremew of Ethiopia.
Chebet is the defending New York City Marathon champion.
