Kabras Sugar edge Strathmore Leos to claim third place at Kabeberi 7s
By Kenneth Mwenda, September 7, 2025Kabras Sugar ended their Kabeberi Sevens campaign on a high note after beating Strathmore Leos 24-12 in the third-place playoff at the RFUEA Grounds on Sunday evening, September 7, 2025.
The sugar millers produced a strong first-half performance and resisted a spirited Leos comeback to secure the bronze medal.
Kabras drew first blood just two minutes into the clash. Brian Mutua pounced on a turnover deep in the Leos’ 22 to dive over the whitewash. A minute later, Kenya Sevens international Kevin Wekesa doubled the advantage. Exploiting space on the right flank, Wekesa darted past his marker and touched down for a 10-0 lead.
Fresh from his stint with Monaco in France, Wekesa underlined his quality again at the stroke of half-time. Receiving an offload in midfield, he powered through to score his second try and stretch Kabras’ advantage to 15-0 at the break.
Leos, who have been consistent throughout the National Sevens Circuit and sit second on the standings, came back stronger after the restart. Their determination paid off as they crossed the line to reduce the deficit. However, Kabras quickly hit back, restoring a 12-point cushion with a well-worked move that made it 17-5.
Victor Mola, a reliable figure for Strathmore, gave his side hope with a clinical finish. He pierced through the Kabras defence inside the 22 and grounded the ball. The successful conversion cut the gap further and set up a tense finale.
Yet Kabras would not be denied. With seconds left, Matthias Osimbo delivered the killer blow. Receiving a clever cutback from Raymond Ambale on the left, Osimbo slalomed through the defence to score. The conversion sailed over, sealing a 22-12 victory for the sugarmen.
The win offered Kabras a positive end to their weekend, having earlier fallen to KCB Rugby in the main cup semi-finals. Leos, meanwhile, had suffered a narrow 12-10 defeat to Daystar Falcons in the other semi-final.
Kabras, KCB dominate early
The 35th edition of the George Mwangi Kabeberi Sevens had kicked off on Saturday with fireworks. Kabras were ruthless on day one, cruising through Pool D without conceding a single point. They dismantled Kisumu RFC 61-0, humbled Embu RFC 53-0, and dominated Menengai Oilers 28-0 in the Rai Derby.
KCB also showed their pedigree, overpowering Mean Machine 54-0, Mombasa RFC 31-0, and edging Nakuru RFC 21-15 to top their pool. Strathmore Leos impressed with wins over Mwamba, Impala, and Kenya Harlequins, while Daystar Falcons stunned established names such as Homeboyz and Catholic Monks to reach the quarters.
However, defending circuit champions Kenya Harlequins endured a tournament to forget. Forced to field a reserve team due to unpaid dues, Quins failed to reach the main cup quarter-finals for the first time this season. Hosts Mwamba, on the other hand, battled hard to qualify after tight wins in their pool.
