By Peter Mulemi, April 5, 2022K24 TV’s sports reporter Kelvin Kimathi has been nominated for the AIPS Sports Media award.
The 26-year-old journalist who also doubles up as a show host and anchor has been nominated for the Young Reporter of the Year award alongside 11 other young reporters from different countries across the globe.
AIPS shortlisted Kimathi on April 4, 2022, for his feature Margaret Nyairera: Kenya’s athletes battle with depression and trans-gender stigma which was aired last year.
Nyareira, an Olympic bronze medalist was banned by Athletics Kenya (AK) from competing after she refused to take medication that would alter her testosterone even though the rule was intended to limit competition at world championships and Olympic Games.
Kimathi started his career as an intern at K24 TV in early 2016 after graduating from the Multimedia University of Kenya before joining KTN as a sports reporter. He would then head back to K24 in August 2020.
His star would then rise as he went on to anchor 7:00 pm sports news on K24. Currently, he hosts among other shows, La Liga Santimaa (Saturdays at 7 pm), and Jungu la Spoti (every Monday and Friday; 1:30-2:00 pm).
Kimathi is also the rugby lead host for all local competitions (Kenya cup finals, Safari 7s and Barthes cup).
