Junior golfers set for interschool clash at Windsor
By Lucky Oluoch, May 16, 2025Kakamega Sports Club is set to host the 10th leg of the NCBA Golf Series this Saturday as more than 100 golfers tee off from 7am, seeking qualification slots for the grand finale slated for November at Muthaiga Golf Club.
The weekend’s action marks a double boost for Kenyan golf with junior players also set to compete at the Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club today in the second NCBA Interschool Golf Tournament of the year.
The Kakamega event is part of a countrywide tour that began in January and is expected to draw a large field onto the club’s lush 9-hole course.
So far, over 40 golfers already through to the finale as stakes remain high for amateurs hoping to secure a place among the country’s best.
“It’s a great honor to welcome the NCBA Golf Series to Kakamega,” said NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora, adding, “Our course is in excellent condition despite the recent rains, and we are confident that players will enjoy a competitive yet enjoyable experience.”
Club Captain Ronald Omondi noted the course is in “excellent condition despite the recent rains” and urged players across the region to participate in what he termed a “competitive but enjoyable” outing.
The Kakamega leg follows last weekend’s ninth event at Machakos Golf Club where Joe Mboya (hcp 17) and Ruth Mbeti (hcp 33) emerged overall winners in the men’s and ladies’ categories, respectively.
Mboya’s 44 points edged out Ben Mumo and David Mwangtangi, who tied at 42 points, while Mbeti’s 40-point round saw her top a strong ladies’ field.
Meanwhile, junior golf action shifts to Windsor as 168 youngsters from 27 schools battle it out across four age-group categories in the second interschool event organised by the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) and NCBA Bank.
New entrants include Consolata School Nairobi, Nova Pioneer-Tatu Primary, Pioneer Junior School, and Sun and Shield from Nakuru. The tournament, open to both handicapped and non-handicapped players, supports JGF’s “Get Into Golf Initiative,” which aims to develop junior talent from grassroots to elite level.
“This tournament is not just about scoring, it’s about inclusion, access, and growing the game,” said JGF President Vincent Mukiri.
“By expanding participation, we’re shaping the future of golf in Kenya.”
St Ruth School and Home School, dominant performers in the March edition, are among the top contenders heading into today’s clash.
The interschool circuit will conclude in October with the NCBA Lisle Shaw Interschool Tournament, open exclusively to juniors with official handicaps.
