Joe Waithira downplays Murang’a Seal’s dramatic defeat to Gor Mahia
By Luke Oluoch, January 15, 2026Muranga Seal attacking midfielder Joe Waithira has explained the reason for the team’s dramatic 3-2 defeat on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.
Speaking after the match, Waithira downplayed the team’s second-half implosion, describing the five-goal thriller as a scenario in a football match.
Waithira stunned Gor Mahia with an early strike inside the opening ten minutes before Francis Memuso doubled the lead.
A win still proved elusive in the clash, however, not to be for the Osborne Monday’s side, who sought to continue their in-form league run, having entered the game on an unbeaten streak of ten games.
Gor Mahia turned the tie on its head with second-half strikes from Paul Ochuoga and Felix Oluoch restoring level pegging before Ebenezer Asifuah stole the show with a late strike.

“It is football, and anything can change within seconds in a football match: we were 2-0 up and lost concentration in the second half. Gor capitalised on the lapses and utilised their chances,” he stated.
Waithira, who also bagged the league’s player of the month awards for his stellar role in Seals’ remarkable string of results, also opened up on the secrets to his success.
Golden Boot chase
His strike against Gor Mahia was his eighth goal of the season as he firms up his prospect for the Golden Boot race.
“The secret is about prayers and working hard on the pitch. I always dedicate myself to my game with much prayer to God. Of course, prayers alone cannot get it done. Equally, I have to put in the hard work on the pitch with better performance,” he stated.
Heading to their next game, Waithira has the team focus ahead with lessons picked.
With the win, Gor climbed to the top of the standings, dislodging AFC Leopards, who dropped to second on an inferior goal difference.
Seals on their retained slot in the top half of the log, coming in at ninth.
