Inside Beatrice Chebet’s key moments in her rise to stardom
By Joel Masibo, September 23, 2025Double world champion and Olympic gold medalist Beatrice Chebet has maintained consistency in delivering to Team Kenya in major World Athletics-organised competitions.
Fresh from winning gold in the women’s 10,000m and 5000m at the just concluded 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, People Daily Digital has traced back Beatrice Chebet’s journey in the sport from her early days as a professional athlete.
Chebet’s key moments
Beatrice Chebet’s journey began in 2018 when she stormed to victory in the World U20 5,000m in Finland, immediately marking herself as one of Team Kenya’s brightest young prospects. She quickly rose through the senior ranks, proving her versatility in both track and cross country.
In 2019, Beatrice Chebet clinched World Cross Country (Denmark) silver before cementing her place in history with back-to-back senior world titles in 2023 (Bathurst) and 2024 (Belgrade).
On the track, her rise was just as remarkable. She claimed the world 5,000m silver in 2022 (Eugene), followed by bronze in 2023 (Budapest). Then came the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where Chebet delivered a golden double in the 5,000m and 10,000m, etching her name among the greats. Beyond championships, she conquered the roads too, smashing the 5km world record in 2023 (14:13), proof of her unmatched versatility.

Her crowning moment arrived in May 2024, when she became the first woman ever to break the 29-minute barrier in the 10,000m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, setting a stunning world record of 28:54.14. She followed it up in July 2025 by rewriting history again, becoming the first woman under 14 minutes in the 5,000m (13:58.06) in Eugene, the United States of America.
Chebet steals show in Tokyo
At the World Championships in Tokyo 2025, Chebet reaffirmed her dominance. She struck gold in the 10,000m (30:37.61) and doubled up with another gold in the 5,000m, becoming a double world champion.
Speaking on Saturday, September 13, 2025, moments after the triumph, Chebet stated that the motivation to seal an additional gold medal to add to her previous titles propelled her quest at the World Championship stage.
“I am so happy. Coming to Tokyo, I told myself, I don’t have a World Championship gold, so I must get one. I am a World Cross Country champion, I am an Olympic champion, and now I am a World Champion,” she remarked.
“I am so proud of myself. I also thank everyone who has supported me on this journey,” Chebet added.
Meanwhile, the Tokyo heroics saw Beatrice Chebet become the only woman ever to hold both Olympic and World Championship titles in the 5,000m and 10,000m, while simultaneously holding world records in the two distances.
