Innocent Mutiso lauds McCarthy’s masterclass and players’ grit after Morocco’s win

In an interview with a local TV station on Monday, August 11, 2025, Mutiso lauded the team for always pushing themselves to fresh limits, especially when people expressed doubts about them.

“We had a depleted squad through injuries and players who left for moves outside Kenya. But players have had a conducive environment, demonstrated remarkable fighting spirit and grit, and played with their heart to top the group,” he stated.

The winger termed Sunday’s victory a testament to Kenya’s growing confidence as the team extended their unbeaten start to three games.

“We have punched above our weight by beating two-time champs Morocco, who have lost only two games since 2015. It is our debut, and we have done exceptionally well. We also beat DR Congo. Kudos to the boys who have shown from the bench that they can be relied upon too,” he added.

“I’m surprised that yesterday we played over 50 minutes with ten men and the other over 69 minutes. I think those boys deserve more than 1 million; they deserve 2 million.” he added.

Praises for Mccarthy

Mutiso also reserved praises for coach Benni McCarthy, whom he praised for his unique courage.

“I am glad Benni did something unexpected with the massive changes he made. He did an awesome job. He was brave to change the team and would have faced massive backlash from Kenyans, but he knew what he was doing. You can see the way he motivates his player, and apart from the flag and the financial motivation, this team is playing for their coach,” he added.

The win against Morocco took Kenya to the top of Group A with seven points after three games. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Kenya held firm, with Ryan Ogam’s 42nd-minute goal proving decisive.

Kenya now angles for their final group ti against Zambia on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.
