Imali eyes glory in C’wealth games after missing US event
National women’s 100m champion Maximilla Imali says she is enjoying the time of her life despite not making it to the World Athletics Championships in Eugene Oregon.
The sprinter was dropped from the Kenyan team for the World Athletics Championships after failing to undergo the mandatory three dope tests.
The 2019 All African Games 400m bronze medallist, who had qualified by ranking as she sits in position 47 and 51 in 100m and 200m race respectively, now she has shifted her focus to Commonwealth Games.
Imali who broke her own 100m record for the fifth time this year, running 11.19 seconds at World Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games trials in Nairobi last month believes she can do better in Birmingham.
Imali went into the trials ranked 48th in the world with her national record-breaking time of 11.26 in the 100m semi-finals at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Reduit, Mauritius on June 8 this year.
“I have been doing my best in training. The interesting part is that I have been able to improve with per race, the secret is competing more often to get to the top level,” said Imali.
At the Commonwealth Games, Imali will double up in 200m where she improved her national record to 23.12 seconds last month.
“With the help of my coaches, I have been working hard here in Kasarani where I have been in camp for the last three weeks,” said Imali who won silver in the women’s 200m in Reduit, Mauritius.
Meanwhile her coach Dennis Mwanzo said they have to contend with Commonwealth Games after failing to meet the World Championships threshold.
“ We hae to accept our current situation because the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) demands that every athlete undergoes three mandatory dope tests,” Mwanzo said.
