‘I’m lucky to be alive’- says Sofapaka boss Kalekwa after nasty accident
By Print Reporter, July 17, 2024Kenya Premier League side Sofapaka president Elly Kalekwa has told People Sport that he is lucky to be alive after being involved in a grisly road accident that involved three cars and left his SUV Toyota Landcruiser written off.
The accident occured along Likoni road in Nairobi, next to the Winners Chapel church after his driver lost control and rammed into other vehicles before the car was brought to a halt by a giant concrete next to the road.
The accident happened on Monday morning, a few hours after the club owner had watched his side beat Naivas FC 1-0 in the second leg of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League promotion play-offs at the Dandora Stadium, that saw them win the two-legged encounter 2-0.
According to Kalekwa, the car lost its breaks before the accident.
“God has been good to me. Last week I attended the graduation of my daughter in Britain and on Sunday I witnessed my team Sofapaka win the promition play-offs to remain in the top tier, then a few hours later this happens. This was the work of the devil and I’m happy to have survived the crash,” Kalekwa told People Sport.
He added: “The impact was massive. All the airbags in the car came out and the vehicle is written off. I have been receiving several calls from friends and well wishers who are very worried about, but I want to tell them that I am out of danger, just nursing some serious abnominal pains.”
Kalekwa and his driver were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital where they were treated and discharged.
The mangled wreckage was towered to Industrial Area Police Station.
