Hussein Mohammed vows to replicate CHAN 2024 success at AFCON 2027
Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed has vowed to replicate the success of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) at the fast-approaching 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027).
Mohammed’s sentiments on Monday, January 19, 2026, followed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe handing the Federation’s flag to the East African football leadership during the final of AFCON 2025 between hosts Morocco and champions Senegal in Rabat on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
The CAF’s flag handover signalled the next host nations of the 2027 showpiece as Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda seek to stage an AFCON tournament for the first time in the competition’s history, shortly after hosting the CHAN 2024 jointly in August and September 2025.

Road to AFCON 2027
”Tonight marks a proud moment for our region as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania officially receive the flag to host AFCON 2027. East Africa is ready, and Kenya is looking forward to playing its part in delivering a tournament that will leave a lasting mark on African football. After setting new standards with the most successful CHAN in history, we are determined to raise the bar even higher in 2027. The journey begins now.” Hussein Mohammed said.
The flag handover event will symbolise the honours given to the East African nations to stage the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations through the Pamoja Bid.
Speaking on the same, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has reaffirmed the preparedness and commitment of the Pamoja Countries to deliver a successful tournament, underscoring the region’s growing readiness in infrastructure, coordination, and hosting capacity.

PS Mwangi is leading a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Sports and the Football Kenya Federation in Morocco on benchmarking purposes as the country gears up for the great continental football extravaganza next year.
On the same note, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has maintained that Kenya, like the rest of the host nations, is ready for the task ahead.
”Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are set to receive the AFCON Flag following the conclusion of the #AFCON25 finals in Rabat, Morocco. Kenya is prepared and committed to deliver a successful tournament, as we demonstrate our growing potential in football development and showcase the East African region’s growing readiness in infrastructure, coordination, and hosting capacity.” Mvurya said.
Meanwhile, CHAN 2024 has been described as a precursor of AFCON 2027 by the East African host nations amid pledges to set new standards in the tournament’s history.
