Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has expressed confidence in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania’s readiness to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, following the official handover of the flag at the conclusion of the 2025 tournament in Morocco.

In a statement posted on his X account on Monday, January 19, 2026, Mohammed described the occasion as a proud moment for East Africa and reiterated Kenya’s commitment to delivering a tournament that would leave a lasting impact on African football.

“Tonight marks a proud moment for our region as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania officially receive the flag to host AFCON 2027. East Africa is ready, and Kenya is looking forward to playing its part in delivering a tournament that will leave a lasting mark on African football,” Mohammed stated.

Building on CHAN’s success

The FKF President emphasised that East Africa’s successful hosting of the 2024 CHAN provides a strong foundation for the upcoming AFCON tournament.

“After setting new standards with the most successful CHAN in history, we are determined to raise the bar even higher in 2027. The journey begins now,” he said.

The three East African nations jointly hosted the African Nations Championship, which was widely praised for its organisation, infrastructure, and passionate crowds.

AFCON 2025 conclusion

Mohammed’s comments came shortly after Senegal’s Pape Gueye scored in extra time to secure a 1-0 victory over host nation Morocco, claiming their second AFCON title at the 2025 finals held in Rabat.

The finals match was marred by chaotic scenes at the end of normal time, with Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missing a penalty in the 24th minute of injury time that could have ended his country’s 50-year trophy drought.
