How Kakamega Homeboyz intend to win two titles next season

By , August 22, 2024

Kakamega Homeboyz ended their long wait for their first title on July 1, 2023, when they clinched the Mozzart Bet Cup at the Kasarani Stadium.

Homeboyz beat Tusker 1-0 in the high-stakes final courtesy of a second-half goal from experienced winger Kevin Amwayi.

Ordinarily, cup winners’ pocket sh2 million in prize money but Homeboyz banked an extra million given that the tournament and club are both bankrolled by gaming firm Mozzart Bet.

The firm has sponsored the cup in the last two seasons while their partnership with Homeboyz has been in existence since December 2020.

Interestingly, both Homeboyz and the cup organizers (Football Kenya Federation) receives Sh20 million from the betting firm per season with the club set to pocket an extra five million should they win the league title.

Homeboyz failed to retain the title in the last season as they fell 1-0 to KCB in the quarterfinals played at the Dandora Stadium.

Recently, Homeboyz made changes in their technical bench, bringing in coach Ken Kenyatta to fill in the gap left by Patrick Odhiambo, who resigned and joined KCB.

Kenyatta joined Homeboyz on a year-long deal marking his return to the touchline after five months in the cold.

Odhiambo, left Homeboyz with his head high as he will be best remembered as the coach who brought the first title to the club and pushed open the door to continental football.

Club chairman Cleophas Shimanyula says Kenyatta has firm instructions to ensure that the club wins the tournament for the second time and secures a return ticket to the Caf Confederation Cup.

“We agreed with him that he has to win titles particularly, the Mozzart Bet Cup. We have solved the problem that cost us last season and we are looking forward to working with him to deliver it,” Shimanyula told SportsBoom.com.
