Hellen Obiri wins bronze medal in women’s marathon at Paris Olympic Games

Kenya’s Hellen Obiri has won a bronze medal after finishing third in the hotly contested women’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Obiri clocks 2:23:10

Obiri clocked 2:23:10 and finished behind world record-holder Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia who came in the second position after clocking 2:22:58.

The marathon was won by Sifan Hassan of Netherlands who clocked 2:22:55. The Ethiopian-Dutch marathoner gave an extra-ordinary sprint towards the finish line to claim the top position.


Lokedi and Peres Jepchirchir

During the marathon that was run on Sunday, August 11, 2024, Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi finished in fourth place, while defending champion Peres Jepchirchir claimed the 15th position.

“Congratulations #TeamKenya. Hellen Obiri secures the 3rd spot in the Women’s Marathon, Sharon Lokedi grabs 4th place, and Peres Jepchirchir claims the 15th position. Hellen Obiri – Bronze Olympic Medalist,” the Kenyan Olympic Team stated in a statement on X.

Jepchirchir won the London Marathon in April, after clocking the women’s world record of two hours, 16 minutes and 16 seconds.

Additionally, the 30-year-old Jepchirchir is also a two-time champion in the World Half Marathon.

Obiri’s previous wins

Obiri has in the past won two silver medals at the Olympic games, narrowly missing her chances at the gold medal.

She has won several other races including the World Cross Country and World Championships among other notable competitions.

Before the marathon, Obiri said she was planning to hang her boots after the 2024 Olympics, stating that she would give it her all during the 2024 Olympics.
