Football Kenya Federation Premier League record champions Gor Mahia have parted ways with Kenyan defender Kennedy Onyango after the expiry of his contract with the club.

Onyango was hospitalised after suffering a horrific injury in a rescheduled league clash against KCB on Monday, April 7, 2025. In their sportsmanship gesture and staying true to their welfare policies, Gor Mahia confirmed that they will stand with the player throughout his recovery journey.

”Kennedy Onyango will be departing following the conclusion of his contract. In keeping with our dedication to player welfare, he will retain access to the club’s medical insurance to support his recovery from an injury sustained during his time with us. Wishing you all the best, Kennedy, get well soon!” The club said via its official social media platforms on Friday, August 8, 2025.

Initial support

‎Initially, members of Gor Mahia’s technical bench and players had on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 paid a courtesy call to Kennedy Onyango, who is hospitalised after suffering the horrific injury.

Sacked club coach ‎Sinisa Mihic and captain Philemon Otieno led the team out as they presented the defender with a bouquet and relayed their messages of goodwill and quick recovery. ‎Onyango sustained fractures to his tibia and fibula during the clash and was rushed to the hospital.

‎“Wishing Kenedy Onyango a speedy recovery! We’re all behind you, and we can’t wait to see you back on the pitch. We’re confident you’ll be back stronger than ever!” the club posted on its Instagram page on Wednesday, April 9, during the visit.

‎The defender’s setback came at a time when the reigning champions were seeking to mount a defence for their faltering bid to retain their league title with eight games left in the campaign.

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia have set their sights on starting the new season strong after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign. Newly unveiled club head coach Charles Akonnor has emphasised the importance of building team cohesion and instilling a clear style of play as the record KPL heavyweights prepare for the upcoming Football Kenya Federation Premier League season. The side lost their title to Kenya Police and FKF cup to Nairobi United last season.
