Gor Mahia surmounted a formidable opponent in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League after beating Posta Rangers 1-0 on Saturday, January 6, 2023.

In a game that shocked fans after head coach Johnathan McKinstry benched the league’s top scorer, Benson Omala, K’Ogalo nonetheless went on to win, although by a slim margin.

The victory over Posta Rangers, who were very solid and lethal in the opening 10 games, means K’Ogalo remain unbeaten so far.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Onyango scored the only goal of the match when he headed home in the 39th minute.

Onyango was in the right position to connect to a pass delivered by Alpha Onyango from a corner position to break the deadlock by beating Rangers’ goalkeeper Michael Wanjala.

Substitutions

McKinstry made two changes when the second hand began by bringing in Boniface Omondi and Lawrence Juma, who replaced Patrick Sibomana and Ernest Wendo, respectively.

Omala then came on four minutes after the hour mark and replaced Bryson Wangai. The former Kisumu Day star was welcomed by applause from fans around the stadium. In the other change, Rogers Mugisha replaced Patrick Kaddu.

Despite the attack-minded change by Gor Mahia, they were unable to extend the lead. However, they managed to collect all three points on offer as Rangers suffered another defeat.

Gor Mahia will continue to enjoy the position at the summit with the 37 points that they have collected from 17 games. The results mean Gor Mahia’s lead at the top has been increased by seven points as the Mailmen chase from behind after losing the top position.

With the Rangers’ loss, Nairobi City Stars will take the second position. Simba wa Nairobi were 3-0 winners over Talanta in one of the matches that were played on Saturday.
