Gor Mahia fluff chance to move top in FKF Premier League
By Collins Amanga, November 5, 2023
Gor Mahia FC missed out on a golden opportunity to claim the top spot in the FKF Premier League as they were held to a goalless draw by Kenya Police at Moi International Stadium Kasarani on a Sunday.
The reigning champions went into the game in second place on the league table with 19 points, just one point behind the league leaders, Posta Rangers, who had 20 points.
Gor Mahia possible points
A victory for Gor Mahia would have seen them move to 22 points, establishing a two-point lead at the summit.
This fixture saw Gor Mahia facing off against Kenya Police, a team coached by their former manager, Zdravko Logarušić.
Gor Mahia were eager to apply pressure on the law enforcers, who had endured a four-match winless streak after initially enjoying back-to-back victories.
The first half of the match didn’t offer much in terms of goal-scoring opportunities, as both sides struggled to break through each other’s defences.
Just before the halftime whistle, Francis Kahata of Kenya Police had a chance to break the deadlock, but his shot missed the target.
At this point, Gor Mahia knew that Posta Rangers, who were playing at Kasarani Annex, had dropped points, and they were looking for a late goal to capitalize.
Gor Mahia chances
Gor Mahia’s best chances to score came in the 58th minute, first with Geoffrey Ochieng’s long-range shot that was comfortably saved by Patrick Matasi. Moments later, they forced a turnover in possession, but John Macharia’s effort sailed over the crossbar.
In an attempt to shake things up, Police tactician Zdravko Logarusic made substitutions in the 60th minute, bringing on Kenneth Muguna and David Okoth for Alvin Mang’eni and Francis Kahata.
These changes injected new life into the Police’s attack, and they came close to breaking the deadlock when Tito Okello’s shot from inside the box narrowly missed the target.
Despite these efforts, both teams failed to find the back of the net, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
With the results, Posta Rangers remain top of the log now with 21 points while Gor Mahia are on 20 points after 11 rounds.
