Gor Mahia eye strong start to new season as preseason kicks off

Club’s head coach Charles Akonnor has emphasised the importance of building team cohesion and instilling a clear style of play as the record KPL heavyweights prepare for the upcoming Football Kenya Federation Premier League season.
Speaking during the club’s ongoing preseason training, the Ghanaian tactician expressed satisfaction with the early progress and revealed that the team is still in a phase of integrating new signings and establishing tactical clarity.

“We are in a preseason situation where we will gradually get to know new players while trying to implement the idea of how we want to play.
“We will combine the fitness training and understand the style of play… that’s where we are now,” Akonnor said as Gor Mahia hit the camp on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
Akonnor, who took over the reins at Gor Mahia earlier in the month, is tasked with restoring the club’s dominance after a mixed campaign last season. With a blend of experienced stars and fresh faces in the squad, his focus is on physical readiness and shaping a coherent football philosophy at K’Ogalo.
Club captain Philemon Otieno echoed the coach’s sentiments and underlined the team’s determination to bounce back stronger following a disappointing end to last season.
“We are back after a long break and have started our preparations ahead of the new season,” Otieno stated. “The players are psyched up to start on a high because we didn’t finish last season well. We are looking forward to having a good season.”
Gor Mahia, Kenya’s most decorated football club, will be hoping for a turnaround in fortunes as they seek to reclaim the league title and make a mark on the continental stage. The club’s faithful will also be eager to see how Akonnor’s tactical blueprint unfolds and whether it can deliver the consistency and silverware they yearn for.
With preseason underway and morale high in camp, all eyes will be on the Green Army as they prepare for a new chapter under Akonnor’s stewardship.
