Ghost Mulee: Why Kenyan players and coaches are rushing to Tanzania

By , August 31, 2025

Former Harambee Stars coach Jacob “Ghost” Mulee has shared reasons why more Kenyan players and coaches are attracted to join other clubs in the neighbouring country of Tanzania.

Speaking to a local TV station on Saturday, August 30, 2025, the former national team gaffer attributed the trend to hefty incentives offered by the Tanzanian outfits.

Ghost Mulee disclosed that some players in Tanzania receive monthly salaries as high as Ksh300,000.

“All players from Kenya, coaches are going now to Tanzania. Why? I did my research, the top-paid player today in Tanzania playing for Azzam is getting $25,000 per month, “Mulee stated.

To ensure Kenya remains competitive, the former national team tactician implored different stakeholders to build on the momentum created by the just-concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN) to bankroll footballing activities.

“Now that we have come from Chan, we have seen what an incentive from the President can do, plus other factors. We need to push our league to another level. We need to increase our salaries so that players can stay here. Otherwise, all our players will be going to the Tanzania league,” he warned.

Tap into the corporate world

Mulee emphasised the need to invest in football by drawing comparisons with how different corporate entities are supporting different outfits in Tanzania. He detailed that the right investment would also increase prize money for teams awarded after winning the local league.

“So football is money, and if we can bring the corporate world, who have gotten some leeway in terms of government, I think there is a waiver that they get if they sponsor sports. They should take advantage of that,” Ghost Mulee reiterated.

“Yesterday, when Super Sport was producing in Kenya, we had a lot of Tanzanian players coming to Kenya because they were being seen by other scouts. Kenya was a lucrative league. Remember when we had all this Everton coming to Kenya under Sportpesa sponsorship?”

Nonetheless, he lauded the changing phase of football management in the country, where former players are taking up active roles in different clubs and even at the national level.

According to the former coach, their input will help elevate football in Kenya.
