Four wins in a row see AFC Leopards move clear from the relegation in the league
Four straight wins from their last four Kenya Premier League matches, and AFC Leopards seem to have re-discovered their missing link in the top flight.
Ingwe’s rejuvenation under Belgian coach Tomas Trucha continued to blemish after they dispatched Kariobangi Sharks 2-0 in their round of 20 fixture at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
Despite being reduced to 10 men after Randi Bakari was shown a straight red card in the closing stages of the contest, goals courtesy of Victor Omune and Boniface Munyendo had already ensured Ingwe registered their sixth victory of the campaign and jumped two places above Ulinzi Stars and Murang’a Seal to stay at 10th position on the 18-team table with 27 points.
Since their 1-1 draw against Murang’a Seal at SportPesa Arena on December 10, Ingwe have gone ahead to win their last four fixtures and kept four clean sheets in the process. They started with a 1-0 win against Ulinzi, a 1-0 away victory against Muhoroni Youth, a 2-0 win against Nairobi City Stars, and now the 2-0 result against Sharks.
The defeat left Sharks winless from their last four outings, their last victory coming in the 3-0 result against FC Talanta on December 21. Sharks, who dropped to 16th on the log with 19 points, two places above the relegation zone, drew 1-1 against Murang’a, suffered a 1-0 defeat against Gor Mahia, drew 2-2 against Bandari, and now lost 2-0 against AFC Leopards.
Bandari jumped to the third position following their comeback 3-2 victory against Murang’a at SportsPesa Arena. After Titus Kapchanga put the home side ahead, the Dockers responded to level matters courtesy of Umar Kasumba in the 11th minute for a 1-1 half-time scoreline.
Peter Mwaura then put Murang’a ahead for the second time in the 67th minute but second-half substitute Francis Kahiro drew Bandari level yet again in the 70th minute. With the game headed for a 0-0 draw, Bandari had the last laugh as Mwaphalu Hamisi scored in the stoppages to earn them a deserved victory.
The win saw Bandari move to third with 34 points, nine fewer than leaders and champions K’Ogalo, and one less than second-placed Posta Rangers. Meanwhile, the defeat saw Murang’a drop to position 12 with 24 points. In another match, Shabana earned a vital 0-0 draw against Nairobi City Stars at Machakos Stadium. The game at Machakos Stadium saw both City Stars and Shabana reduced to 10 men after Newton Otieno and Prince Ayeko were sent off.
Shabana are still languishing at the relegation zone with 18 points. Elsewhere, Ulinzi Stars made it two wins out of two after edging out FC Talanta 1-0. The Soldiers went into the fixture having beaten Tore Bobe by the same margin and are now sitting 11th with 24 points.
