By , August 31, 2025

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is now turning its attention to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, drawing confidence from the country’s successful co-hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

In a statement on Sunday, August 31, 2025, FKF indicated that the successful hosting of CHAN had helped Kenya raise the bar and establish itself as a hosting hub.

“By successfully hosting #CHAN2024, Kenya has raised the bar and stamped its place as the epicentre of African football. The journey now moves forward to AFCON 2027,” the statement read in part.

Early preparations

Kenya’s early preparations are a response to historical setbacks in hosting major tournaments due to inadequate infrastructure. With less than two years to go before AFCON qualifiers begin, the government is racing against time to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

The flagship Talanta Sports City Stadium in Nairobi recently received a major financial boost through a Ksh44.79 billion infrastructure bond issued by the government.

Nyayo and the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, are among other stadiums expected to play a crucial role in hosting the continental showpiece.

Ruto’s promise

FKF’s attention shift came hours after President William Ruto promised to deliver a memorable AFCON competition.

Speaking during a State House luncheon held in honour of the Harambee Stars, who exited at the quarterfinal stage, Ruto stressed that preparations must begin immediately.

“We begin the journey to AFCON 2027 today. We prepare our teams from the bottom, from every corner to every village. We have agreed on how we are going to partner with the team well going forward,” Ruto emphasised.

CHAN experience

Kenya hosted the CHAN final where Morocco edged Madagascar 3-2 in a pulsating match played at Kasarani in front of a sizeable crowd and top officials.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino commended Kenya’s preparedness for the CHAN 2024, calling it an investment in the youth.

“The fact that there is a feeling out there that football is more prominent in the West, North, or South of Africa, but the East is kind of lagging, is simply wrong.”

“When you see the passion that is here, the commitment; new stadiums are being built here, infrastructure coming together, you’ve heard about the viewing figures (40 million), the fans, this shows that it’s right to invest in the game because this is investment in the youth of Kenya, which has incredible talent,” Infantino stated.

In their statement, FKF also appreciated the government and fans for making CHAN a success.

“Our deepest appreciation goes to the Government of Kenya for its steadfast support, and to the fans whose passion and energy defined this tournament,” FKF stated.
