Although the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League is still in its infancy stages, it appears that all the teams which have hit the 20-point mark have prospects of laying claim to the title.

The parentheses include Nzoia Sugar (28 points), Gor Mahia (27 points), KCB (27 points), Tusker (25 points), Kenya Police (24 points), Ulinzi Stars (23 points), AFC Leopards (22 points) and Kakamega Homeboyz (21 points).

Among the teams – all of which were in action at the weekend – it was perhaps Nzoia Sugar who were overly happy to dislodge Gor Mahia to the top of the standings.

Nzoia made a remarkable rebound into the league lead after the barren draw against AFC Leopards at home in a match that recorded one of the biggest crowds ever seen at Sudi Stadium in Bungoma.

Despite the lead, Nzoia ought to be wary of other teams which are breathing on their necks, particularly Gor who have two matches at hand over the Bungoma side and will be vouching to win both of them to return to the driving seat which they had warmed for only 24 hours.

Cautious approach

Nzoia experienced coach Salim Babu commended his players for the ascendancy but said they shall take a cautious approach while hoping to stick to the top slot.

‘’We are happy to be back at the top of the league and that shows that my players have been working hard to make that happen. Of course, we are not ready to drop our intensity although we know that there are other teams which are battling for the title as well and it would be wrong for us to underrate them,” Babu said.

Back to Gor, the Green Army have not lost in their last seven matches and this is a record that resonates with the team’s Head Coach Jonathan McKinstry’s declaration that he is intent on taking Sirkal to “The Promised Land”.
