Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has praised the organisation and atmosphere witnessed during Sunday’s FKF Premier League match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia at Gusii Stadium, describing it as a strong indicator of the league’s steady improvement.

Unlike fans’ unrest that highlighted the fixture previously, the crowd at Gusii Stadium on Sunday, January 11, 2026, maintained peace as home side Shabana FC held record champions Gor Mahia to a barren draw in a crucial fixture with vital points at stake.

In a statement released after the encounter on Monday, January 12, 2026, Mohammed said the fixture was well attended, orderly, and largely free of incidents, attributes he noted were becoming increasingly common across top-flight matches.

The FKF boss noted that the calm atmosphere at Gusii is a positive sign and an indication that the Kenyan top-tier league continues to develop.

Peaceful crowd

“Yesterday at Gusii Stadium, we witnessed a well-attended, well-organised, and largely peaceful matchday between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia. The FKF Premier League continues to improve, and this was another encouraging sign of progress,” Mohammed wrote on X.

He commended supporters from both sides for maintaining discipline, while also acknowledging the role played by the participating clubs, match officials, security agencies and organisers in ensuring the success of the high-profile fixture.

Mohammed extended his appreciation to stakeholders across the country following what he termed a successful weekend of football in all leagues, from the top tier to the lower divisions.

“I also want to congratulate all clubs, officials, and fans across the country for a successful weekend of football in all our leagues,” he added.
While noting that challenges still remain in the local game, the FKF boss expressed optimism about the future, insisting that Kenyan football is on the right path.

“There is still work to do, but the direction is clear. Kenyan football is alive, growing, and full of promise,” he said.

The Shabana versus Gor Mahia fixture attracted thousands of fans to Gusii Stadium, indicating the growing interest in the domestic league and the renewed confidence in matchday organisation and security arrangements.

Following the large turnout, Shabana FC recorded their highest gate collection since returning to the Kenyan Premier League. The club announced that the match generated Ksh3,157,500 in ticket sales, setting a new record for their home games since promotion.
