2024 WAFCON: Top teams qualify as fingers remain crossed for Harambee Starlets

South Africa and Algeria have already qualified for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations by winning their respective last-round qualifiers.

Banyana Banyana, who are the defending champions, were 2-0 winners over Burkina Faso in a match that was held at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

South Africa’s goals were scored by Linda Mothlalo and Nicole Michael in the 55th and 63rd minutes, respectively, and they emerged victorious after the first leg ended in a 1-1 draw for Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.

Algeria secured their place in the continental bonanza after a 1-0 win over Buriundi. This is a huge achievement for the North Africans after missing out on last year’s edition, which was held in Morocco.

Algeria had one foot in the finals after a 5-1 win in the first leg before managing a slim win against the East Africans on Monday.

The qualifiers will be completed on Tuesday, December 5, with the Harambee Starlets facing Botswana in Gaborone. The tie is evenly balanced, given that the two teams produced a 1-1 draw at Nyayo Stadium in the first leg.
