Keane brands Fernandes, Mount as ‘schoolboys’ after Manchester United’s defeat to Tottenham
By Story Agencies, August 20, 2023Roy Keane believes Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount looked like ‘schoolboys’ during Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday, August 19, 2023.
Pape Matar Sarr put Spurs ahead early in the second half before Lisandro Martinez’s own goal with seven minutes remaining secured the first win of Ange Postecoglou’s reign.
United, meanwhile, went close to scoring, with Fernandes squandering the best chance in the first half as he guided his free header off target from six yards out.
Keane’s take
But Keane was furious with United’s players out of possession and claims Erik ten Hag’s attackers offered ‘absolutely nothing’ defensively.
“They just looked lightweight. You look at the six players high up the pitch; when you’re out of possession, they’re giving you absolutely nothing.
“You can almost carry one or two that don’t give you much but can be match-winners, but United are carrying too many players who are not really at it.
“When these players think, ‘Okay, I’ll forgive you for not doing the defensive stuff, but you better be really good when you’re getting on it’, and they’re not doing that.
“When I look at Mount and Fernandes, out of possession, they look like schoolboys,” Keane told Sky Sports.
