Fans react to Collins Injera’s critic-silencing performance on Simbas’ return

By , June 12, 2022

When Collins Injera was named in the Kenya Simbas squad to play Eastern Province Elephants in a Currie Cup match played last Saturday, there was uproar among a section of fans who felt he did not deserve a slot in the squad.

This was because the Kenya 7s star, who is Shujaa’s all-time leading scorer, had been absent from the international scene for some time, with his most recent international appearance being the Tokyo Olympics.

His last 15s appearance before the EP Elephants match was in the 2018 Rugby World Cup Repechage.

His inclusion in the starting lineup was heavily criticized by a section of fans who felt it was time to trust youngsters more than senior players.

The critics brought up Injera’s leisure activities, such as cooking and golfing in their protest against his inclusion.

One social media user by the name More Zes posed a question: “Golf player anacheza aje national 15s rugby? When will we ever learn? (How can a golf player play for the National 15s teams? When will we ever learn?).”

Injera, on his part, went on to impress in the match, setting up Vincent Onyala for the Simbas’ first try of the game. The Mwamba RFC speedster also scored a try early in the first half as the Simbas won 41-24 to end their Currie Cup campaign on a high note.

He went on to celebrate the try with a golf swing, which he repeated at full-time. His celebration appeared to be directed at the critics who insisted he sticks to golf.

Here is what the fans had to say after the match:

Biggie @theMrNjenga:  Bottom Line: A Player who can play all these positions and play them well with the kind of experience Injera has is exactly the person you need around your younger, exciting players heading to an important tournament like the World Cup Qualifiers…

Issa Jaffar @mtemi_bin_fatma: Collins Injera still got energy for our Simbas buana. Longevity.

Simon chöwder Odongo @Chowderrrrr: The Simbas started slow but showed up today but what a performance the players, especially Collins Injera. There’s a quote that says; “on corpses of lions dogs celebrate thinking they have won, but lions are lions and dogs are dogs.”

Ian Chuchu @ChuchuIan: As always Injera silencing the naysayers…Great half #CurrieCup

Stephen wakhu: Perfect ending to a rugby weekend! Crusaders books a spot in the finals on Friday!  Kenya Simbas win their final Currie Cup game on Saturday with the ‘golfer’ Injera getting a well-deserved try!

Ewoton Rueben: Kenya Simbas beat EP Elephants 41 – 24 at RFUEA grounds. Nani alisema Collins Injera ni mzee?

Matoke: Injera is in the same WhatsApp group with James Ward Prowse.

Kamande, RDN: Watu wakusema,”Oh! He’s old”,mara,he should leave playing to the younger ones, mtaambia nini watu..Get in Injera!!!

Ochieng @_jephron: It is strange to see people doubt Injera playing rugby. I never thought I’d see that in my life.
