Kenya’s Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi delivered yet another masterclass in the men’s 800m, retaining his Diamond League crown in a breathtaking finale at Zürich’s Letzigrund Stadium on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The 21-year-old clocked 1:42.37 to win by the slimmest of margins, holding off Britain’s Max Burgin in a photo finish that had fans on their feet. Burgin, who staged a dramatic late surge from mid-pack, crossed in 1:42.42, missing victory by just 0.05 seconds.

“Close call. Olympic 800m champ Emmanuel Wanyonyi holds off Max Burgin and world champ Marco Arop with 1:42.37 to successfully defend his #DiamondLeague title,” World Athletics stated in a statement shared via X.

Close race

It was a race defined by raw speed and nerve, with Canada’s world champion Marco Arop and Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati pushing hard to the line. Incredibly, only 0.47 seconds separated the top four finishers, underlining the sheer intensity of the contest.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi’s dominance

For Wanyonyi, the victory reaffirmed his dominance over the two-lap race and added another prestigious title to his growing list of accolades.

His consistency and composure in high-pressure races continue to make him the man to beat as the athletics world looks ahead to the 2026 World Championships in Tokyo.

Burgin’s performance, meanwhile, was hailed as one of the finest of his career. His ability to remain calm before unleashing a devastating kick on the final straight confirmed his credentials as a rising star in middle-distance running.

The race capped a spectacular second night of the 2025 Wanda Diamond League Final, which saw national records, personal bests, and world-class rivalries come alive under perfect conditions in Zürich.
