Embu 7s: Christie 7s finalist Menengai Oilers brace for main cup quarters
By Luke Oluoch, August 24, 20252025 Christie 7s finalists Menengai Oilers are targeting improved tidings in the fourth series of the ongoing National Rugby Sevens Series, the Embu Sevens.
The Nakuru team is among the eight teams in contention for the Embu honours, with action heating up for the Main Cup quarterfinal on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
The Oilers made it as the Pool C winners on an unbeaten run. In a show of grit and resilience, Geoffrey Ominde’s charges kicked off with a 21-12 win over Nakuru’s RFC.
The team moved from strength to strength, edging University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine and Nondies in their next Group C ties on 31-0 and 24-0 score lines.
The performance left their attacking coach, Lawi Buyachi, chuffed with the prospects ahead of the club.
Eyes on quarters
“Three games, three wins have been a good run. The boys had shown up well, and we are hopeful heading into the Sunday game. “Our target has been to make it out of the pool, which we did, and now for the Main Cup quarters, we are ready,” he stated.
Buyachi credited an assured performance as key to their improved display.

“We have shown sublime composure and patience in our games. Despite the cold conditions, the boys came around,” he added. ‘
Meanwhile, Jon Okola, the team’s skipper, has remained hopeful of getting over the line and clinching the edition after the Christie Sevens final heartbreak.
“We are eyeing the title. We are going to take it a game at a time, and hopefully we will win the tournament,” the skipper said.
In another main cup quarter-tie, Strathmore Leos face off against an improving Daystar Falcons team.
The Falcons punched their way from a tough Pool A to claim a second quarterfinal slot following their impressive run in the Christie 7s.
