Coronavirus stops Africa Club event

Due to the ongoing global coronavirus outbreak, continental volleyball body CAVB, Egypt Volleyball Federation and Al Ahly Sporting Club, the organisers of both the women’s and men’s 2020 African Volleyball Club Championship, have jointly agreed to postpone both events which were scheduled to be played in Cairo, Egypt.

Kenya women’s champions Prisons, runners-up KCB and Kenya Pipeline were set to miss the women’s event which was scheduled from March 31 to April 11.

The same fate could have befallen men’s holders General Service Unit (GSU), Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Prisons with their event set for April 12-23.

“While Al Ahly Sporting Club in liaison with the relevant authorities in Egypt had put in place measures to ensure safety and well-being of all the players, officials and the spectators who were to take part in the championship, CAVB, the Federation and Al Ahly Club recognises the fact that there are various international travel limitations and restrictions in much of the continent that impact the ability of some participants to take part in the tournaments,” read part of CAVB’s statement.

“The agreement to postpone the championships has thus been arrived at in the best interest of all the parties considering that the health of the athletes, officials and fans is to be given top priority by all sporting authorities,” the statement further read.
